What is the Survival Fitness Plan?

People from all around the world train in one or more of the Survival Fitness Plan subjects. There are not too many of us (yet), and we come from all walks of life, but we have one thing in common...

... we all have the desire and drive to develop the skills we need to survive dangerous situations and protect ourselves and our loved ones.

This article is the first of five in an introduction series to help explain exactly what the Survival Fitness Plan is and how it can help you.

Each of the five articles covers a different aspect of the Survival Fitness Plan, but for this one I just wanted to give you an overview of it.

What is the Survival Fitness Plan?

The Survival Fitness Plan helps you develop the skills you need to survive dangerous situations and protect your loved ones.

It's basically divided into two sections, survival and fitness. And then these two sections are divided into subsections.

Survival

The first subsection for survival is wilderness survival. Think 'Bear Grylls', 'Alone', or 'Naked and Afraid'.

Escape and evasion is like your James Bond spy stuff. You will learn the skillsets involved in things like how to get away from people trying to capture you or how to break away if you have been kidnapped in a foreign country.

Fitness

Fitness in the Survival Fitness Plan is all about fight and flight. It's keeping fit by doing activities that will help you escape an enemy - either by fighting or 'running' away.

Fight is self-defense. The Survival Fitness Plan focuses on self-defense in the sense of unarmed combat and improvised weapons as opposed to using firearms.

Flight encompasses what I feel to be the best activities to escape an enemy. These activities include parkour, swimming, and mountain bike riding.

General health and fitness is also weaved into this section, such as nutrition, core exercises, endurance, etc.

It's Not About Being an Expert

After reading about everything involved in the Survival Fitness Plan, I wouldn't be surprised if you are feeling a little overwhelmed - but it's not as much as you think.

That's because the idea of the Survival Fitness Plan is not to become an expert in all (or any) of these topics. I certainly am not!

For the survival subjects, you just want to be skilled enough so you can stay alive if you're ever caught in a survival, disaster, or escape and evasion situation.

For the fitness subjects, the idea is to be good enough so you can escape if an enemy is chasing you. With just a little bit of training, you can be better at most of the fight and flight subjects than 90% of the population.

You don't need to be a martial arts expert to effectively defend yourself on the street. You just need to know (and practice) the a few simple techniques that are proven to work. This is usually enough to make you better than the average untrained person.

And the same is true for all the flight subjects also.

So if you do find yourself in a situation where your attacker is better than you at one thing, because you're pretty good at all of them, you can just switch.

For example, if someone is chasing you down the street, you might know the basics of parkour, and that's enough to get away from most people. Maybe your attacker can run faster than you, but because you train every day, you've got more endurance. Also, you have basic parkour skills, so you can jump a fence or climb a wall faster than he can.

Here's another example. Let's say you're in a fight but them the person you are fighting has a bunch of friends. Even if you're an expert in martial arts, against three people with weapons, it's better to run.

And in that case, you can use parkour and just run away.

Or you might come across a body of water, and then you can just swim because you know you're pretty good at swimming too. Or you come across a bike and since you know the basics of mountain bike riding (a bit more that just knowing how to ride a bike) you can use that to give you the edge over whoever is chasing you.

The point is to give yourself as many options as possible.

Concentrate on What’s Important

Yes, there's a lot of stuff to learn and it's all really good, but don't get overwhelmed because you don't have to learn everything to perfection.

In fact, we don't want you to learn anything to perfection.

You just want to be as good as you can in each of them, but also, some Survival Fitness Plan subjects are more important than others.

For example, I would definitely always start with self-defense or parkour. Because those are the two that are most likely to help you escape a dangerous situation.

Knowing how to rock climb and how to swim, they might help you, but not as often as knowing how to defend yourself or knowing how to run fast and get over obstacles.

Conclusion

I hope this has given you a good overview of what the Survival Fitness Plan is all about.
