Scream Specifics

Screaming is one of the first things that any self-defense instructor will teach you to do, but just screaming might not be enough. It is far better to scream something specific than to generate a lot of noise like an alarm.

This is because when children have tantrums, they normally scream and bystanders won’t usually interfere. They just think the kid is having a tantrum and it’s their parents dragging them to the car. 

But if your child shouts something specific, such as:

“I don’t know this person, I’m being kidnapped”

… it is far more likely that a bystander will at least show more curiosity. Even if they don’t physically help, they are more likely to take note of what the adult and child look like, the car they get in, etc.

I've also heard that if you're being attacked or sexually assaulted as a woman, it's much better to scream fire than rape because, for some reason, people are more likely to respond to it, though I'm not really sure why this is or if it’s even true.

Become a Dead Weight

You can see children doing this in the supermarket; they just fall down on the ground and don't want to do anything or go anywhere.

While I generally don’t recommend going to ground in a street fight, as a children’s self-defense technique this can be very effective, especially when combined with screaming and kicking at the attacker from the ground. 

Which leads us to the last tip. 

Hit Him Where it Hurts

Children aren’t very strong, but they can still cause a lot of pain if they aim for the right places

Good target areas to teach your kids are not only those that hurt, but also that are relatively easy to strike. 

For example, a poke in the eye can be very effective, but it is a very small target area. Pressure points are the same. Knowing them is cool, but trying to hit one is difficult, especially in a high stress situation. 

Instead, go for large areas such as the shins. This is a painful spot to be hit and it is low which makes it a perfect target area for when your child is using the dead weight technique. The groin is another good spot for the same reasons. 

If a person tries to cover a child’s mouth, tell them to bite them. Normally, I would not recommend biting due to the risk of blood contact infections, but in this case, the risk is worth it.


Once your child has been abducted, the odds of escaping drop drastically. It is always best for them to try to escape during the initial grab. 

The above techniques are easy to learn and effective, but they are most effective when used in conjunction. 

This means that you must teach your kids to do all three in the case of an abduction. As soon as someone tries to take them they should drop to the ground while screaming “I don’t know this person, I’m being kidnapped” and kicking at his/her shins and groin.
