What’s on your Self-Defense keychain?

A self-defense keychain is a keychain with some useful self-defense tools on it which you can use to protect yourself if you are ever attacked on the street.

When I was a kid, I had a Kubotan. This was a piece of metal (probably steel or alloy) about 30 cm long and looked like a really large pencil.

The general idea is that you could use it like a self-defense pen, only it was much bigger.

The problem was that it was so big that I would never carry it around. This makes it a pretty poor self-defense tool, because unless you are willing to carry it on the street, what’s the point?

So in this article I want to share a few self-defense items that you can attach to your existing keyring which are not too cumbersome so you will carry it around.

The first item to consider putting on your self-defense keychain is a personal alarm.

You can get little ones, and there are many different sorts to choose from. There are some that work like a grenade with a pin that, when pulled, activates the alarm.

Others only require a push of a button to activate them.

Alternatively, you could just get a whistle. The advantage of having an alarm is that you do not have to put it in your mouth to blow it, but they are both beneficial due to their loudness.

The second item to consider is some kind of personal defense weapon.

You can get a mini keyring sized pepper spray, a Kobutan, or something similar.

There are also many types of hidden self-defense weapons, such as a keyring toy that is actually a knife, though I would be careful with these for legal reasons.

You could also use any key. Grasp all the keys in your hand and have one or two of them protruding from your fist so when you punch someone it does a little extra damage. It is best to aim for a soft target when trying this.

Another thing you could do with your keys is to kind of whip it at your attacker’s face. Hopefully this will give you a one or two seconds you need to get away. These are some easy self-defense moves which can help you escape.

The final thing I want to recommend is a mini flashlight for self-defense.

The main use of this would be as any regular flashlight. It always helps to be able to see where you are going or to make it easier to find stuff in your handbag.

And although not as effective as a personal defense weapon, you could shine it into your attacker’s eyes which might dis-orientate him (or her) enough so you have time to get away.

Teach yourself self-defense that works,
because this is one of the best street fighting books around!

These are the items I would include in a self-defense keychain if I were to make one.

Whatever you put on yours, the main thing is that it doesn’t make it too cumbersome to carry around. Also, it’s great to have all the ‘tools’, but make sure you know and are ready to use them.
