3 Signs of Land You Can Use If Lost in Sea

What would you do if lost at sea?

Most people advise staying near the wreck; since that is the first place rescue teams will search for you.

But if no-one knows you’re there, the next best option for survival is to find land.

In order to do this, you need to know which is the best direction to go.

And that’s exactly what this article is going to teach you…

So read on.

Finding Land When Lost at Sea Vlog

Follow the Birds

Depending on the type of bird, watching them can be a fairly reliable way to know which way land is.

White and Noddy terms, for example, will fly away from land to find food and then return in the afternoon but be careful, because the opposite is true if they are nesting.

On the other hand, some seabirds, such as the Albatross, can spend up to six years at sea without touching land – so choose which birds you follow carefully.

Look to the Clouds

Spotting isolated cumulus clouds is another good indicator of land

These are fluffy clouds that resemble popcorn and typically have a flat base.

If you see one, there is a pretty good chance that there is at least a bit of land underneath it.

Sound and Smell

One of the best indicators of land is the sign of anything that happens on land.

Even if you can’t physically see the land, you may be able to smell things such as smoke or vegetation.

Or perhaps you can hear the sound of waves crashing on the shore, or land mammals making noise.

Teach yourself evasive survival,
because surviving in the wild is harder when your enemy is chasing you!
