Not being able to get out in the wild is no excuse… Here are 3 survival skills you can practice at home, even if you live in a city apartment.

Not being able to get out in the wild is no excuse…

Here are 3 survival skills you can practice at home, even if you live in a city apartment.

At Home Survival Skills Vlog

Start a Fire Without Matches

Even if you’re at home, you can learn how to build a fire without using matches.

The easiest thing to do is buy a survival fire starter from Amazon.

Then practice the art of starting a fire with it.

You don’t even have to build a proper fire (and I don't recommend it unless using a proper fireplace).

Just do enough to get a small flame and build it up a little until you are satisfied that you COULD build it up a lot if you needed to.

Of course, this is best practiced outside and be sure to take all the proper safety precautions, such as having a way to extinguish the fire close at hand.

Create Drinking Water

Knowing how to make drinking water is a very useful skill for survival.

Many countries have access to drinking water from the faucet, but everything is different in the wilderness.

The first step is to filter the water to get out any larger debris and dirt (if it is already clear you can skip this).

You can easily do this in the comfort of your home using a plastic bottle.

Cut off the bottom and turn it upside down. Tie a bit of cloth on the end, then fill it with some charcoal (from the fire you made), then sand, then grass, and then gravel.

Pour the dirty water in the open end and let it drip through.

The next step is to purify it.

One way to do this is to boil it for a few minutes.

Another easy method is the SODIS method. Fill up clear PET bottles with filtered water and just leave it in the sun for a while.

The UV light will kill the bacteria. Exactly how long you leave it out depends on the weather. In general, a full day of good sunlight is enough. If it is a little cloudy, leave it for two days.

If you already have clear water that has been filtered, you can purify it by following the sodas method, which involves boiling the water, placing it in a clean container, then letting it sit in the sun to allow the UV light to kill the bacteria, making the water safe to drink.

First Aid

Everyone in your household should know at least basic first aid.

Take a course as a family and then practice often.

Perhaps you could choose just one day a week to practice one thing for 20 minutes or so.

Not only could this save lives, it is also a great way to spend time together.

Once you have done a course, you can use the ‘Wilderness and Travel Medicine’ book as a guide.

Conclusion

So there you have it.

Some easy ways you can practice your wilderness survival skills from the comfort of your own home.

If you don’t have a backyard, then some of them may require a walk to the park to get the needed resources, but other than that, you have no excuses.

Of course, there are many more things you can practice. Check out ‘Evasive Wilderness Survival Techniques’ for ideas.

Safe training!
