If there are only 3 survival skills you need to practice, these are them!
Venturing in the great outdoors is an awesome way to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Next time you are out there, why not practice these three survival skills?
They are fun and may save your life one day.
Knowing how to create a fire without matches or a lighter is arguably one of the most important survival skills to have and there are numerous ways to do it.
One method is to use a ‘flint and steel’ type survival fire starter.
Another method is to utilize steel wool and a battery, which must be connected in order to ignite a fire.
You may also make a fire with a magnifying glass. Concentrate the sun's energy on a single area, then wait for it to catch fire.
Yet another method is by creating a friction fire such as with a bow and drill.
Collecting safe drinking water in the wilderness can be challenging.
You can turn any trash plastic bottle and turn it into a water filter. Simply cut the bottom off it and start layering filtering materials. An example would be to start with a scrap bit of cloth, then charcoal, then sand, grass, and finally pebbles.
This simple device will filter bigger impurities from your water. But unless you use activated charcoal it won't remove harmful bacteria. Simply bring it to a boil for around 20 minutes to guarantee that the water is safe to drink.
Another approach is to employ the SODAS technique, which involves exposing the water bottle to direct sunlight for around eight hours.
If you need protection from the elements when in the wild, building a shelter may save your life.
A lean-to shelter is one of the simplest natural shelters to make.
To make one, lean a bunch of branches against something (log, tree, etc) and then fill the gaps with grass or mud or whatever you have that will stay there.
Aside from these three abilities (starting a fire, gathering water, and building a shelter), there are two more useful survival skills you should practice: rescue and food preparation.
