Shelter is one of the 5 survival needs.
In this article, you will discover how to find it when in a wilderness survival situation.
Why is shelter important in wilderness survival?
A shelter not only keeps you safe from dangerous creatures or enemies in the area, but it also protects you from extreme temperatures.
Having a shelter also provides you with a place to rest and store any items you may need.
An existing survival shelter is one that you do not have to construct. You may have to do some minor things to make it better, but the main structure is already built and ready to use.
A cave is a great example of an existing shelter. Hollow logs are also good, and in an urban environment, any abandoned building works very well.
Of course, you must be careful that no other creature is using the existing shelter. You would hate to settle in only to discover it is a bears den later on!
If there are no existing shelters available you can build your own.
There are numerous types of survival shelters you can construct depending on the climate, your skills, and your resources.
The most basic is the lean-to shelter, which is very effective when made properly. You can also construct huts and other structures.
If you plan on staying put for a while it may be worth your time to construct something more substantial, e.g., with mud bricks.
Shelter is essential in a survival situation because it can protect you from dangers and extreme temperatures.
Knowing how to make clothing and build a fire is another option for staying warm.
