Fire Building

Knowing how to build a fire is a valuable survival skill no matter what your age.

A fire provides warmth and security. It is also good for signaling for help, cooking food, and purifying water.

But how do you make one?

Always remember to start small.

Gather some sticks in preparation and then begin with lighting tinder. Gradually build it up with leaves and twigs, then smaller sticks, and finally larger pieces of wood.

To light the tinder, teach your children how to use a magnesium fire starter

Shelter Making

You MUST build a shelter if you don’t want to freeze to death!

A fire can be valuable as it provides warmth, but it can also be dangerous when it goes out of hand, which is more likely to happen with children as they are not as knowledgeable of fire safety precautions.

A shelter, on the other hand, can be built without having to worry about starting a forest fire.

Even children can make a simple lean-to with sticks and then cover it with mud and leaves for extra protection.

Water

Another important lesson you can teach kids is how to purify water.

Teaching kids where to find fresh water and how to make a basic water filter is a good starting point.

One of the simplest methods to purify water is to boil it, but there are other methods that you can teach your kids, such as the SODIS method.

Conclusion

There are other important survival techniques that you can teach your children is how to signal for help, which we covered previously.

Once your kids are competent with the above basics, you can move on to more advanced skills.
